Mangroves of Moreton Bay

What are Mangroves?

Mangroves include various plants like trees, shrubs, palms, and ferns that have adaptations for coastal environments. They withstand tides, winds, storm surges, high temperatures, and low-oxygen, soft soils.

In Moreton Bay, seven tree species and the mangrove fern inhabit the local mangrove forests. The Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina) is the most prevalent, acting as a pioneer species that colonises newly exposed mudbanks or artificial drains. Mangroves serve as habitats for various invertebrate species, such as crustaceans, insects, gastropods, and molluscs, and function as nursery sites for multiple fish species. Additionally, mangrove forests provide roosting areas for wading birds and habitats for other bird species, including Honeyeaters, Kingfishers, and Gerygones.
Plants in the intertidal zone experience wide salinity changes, from seawater at high tide to freshwater during low tide or rain. Tides and river flow affect water temperature, nutrients, and oxygen for roots. The soil is typically soft, muddy, and often low in oxygen. Adapted to cope with these tough conditions, mangroves thrive in this dynamic environment.

Conservation Status

​Mangroves in Queensland, are important coastal ecosystems and are better conserved than in many other regions around the world. Most are protected by state laws like the Fisheries Act 1994, which regulates clearing and protects them as key fish habitats.
​Moreton Bay, a National Marine Park and Ramsar wetland, contains over 15,000 hectares of mangroves. While overall conservation is stable, threats like development, altered water flows, pollution, and climate change persist. Ongoing monitoring, management and community engagement are vital to maintain the resilience and ecological benefits of the Bay’s mangroves.

Mangrove Forest: Flora and Fauna

​Mangroves provide crucial shelter, food, and nesting sites for herons such as the Nankeen Night Heron. Their dense roots and branches protect these birds from predators and weather, while nearby shallow waters offer abundant hunting opportunities, especially at dawn, dusk, or night. These habitats are vital for the herons’ survival, breeding, and overall coastal bird diversity.

​Crabs, such as fiddler crabs, are essential for healthy mangrove ecosystems. Their burrowing aerates soil, boosts drainage and oxygen, and supports mangrove and plant growth. By feeding on organic matter, they accelerate decomposition and nutrient cycling. These activities make crabs vital to the stability and productivity of mangrove habitats, supporting many species.
​Mangroves serve as crucial nurseries for young fish and crustaceans, providing shelter from predators and plentiful food in their complex root systems and tidal pools. These safe, resource-rich habitats help juveniles survive and grow, acting as an important nursery site and supporting coastal ecosystems and local fisheries.

Mangroves use specialised reproductive strategies to thrive in coastal areas. Many are viviparous, with seeds that germinate while still attached to the parent, forming propagules instead of dormant seeds. These propagules fall or float to new locations, allowing young mangroves to quickly root and establish themselves in unstable, waterlogged sediments, aiding the colonisation and stabilisation of these habitats.
